What Is Epilepsy?

A seizure is an event and epilepsy is the disease involving recurrent, unprovoked seizures, which are caused by a sudden surge of abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the area of the brain that is affected.  It can be temporary confusion, loss of consciousness, muscle jerking, or unusual sensations.  

Who and Why?

Epilepsy affects people of all ages and can be caused by genetic factors, head trauma, infection, or stroke, though the cause is unknown in many cases.    

Types of Seizures

Focal Seizures, Generalized Seizures and Other Categories.  Each category has their own list of the different types of seizures.  It's important to talk to your diagnosing physician to discuss your unique diagnosis.

Seizure First Aid

Stay with the person.  Keep them safe by moving items away from their head.  Turn them onto their side.  Call 911.  It is important NOT to restrain them or to try and put anything in their mouth.  And finally, administer a rescue medication, if one is indicated.
