KASSANDRA MAAS

A SUDEP Story

Kassie was 19 when she passed away from SUDEP.  She graduated from Black Hawk East with a Veterinary Assistant Degree.  She had just returned from her internship in Maine.  Kassie was supposed to have her first "real" job interview later that day.

It was a normal day.  Most 19 year old's don't get up early and that day was no different.  I was at work and her dad was home.  It got to be later in the day and my husband thought she should be coming down from her room to go to her interview.  He hollered up the stairs and no answer.  He went up to her room and didn't find her.  He called me so I tried calling her.  Ron heard the phone and went back upstairs and that's when he found her...on the floor..between her bed and her desk...she was gone.

Kassie had only had 4 seizures in a 7 year period.  She was medicated and did all the things that she was supposed to do.  We were never informed about SUDEP nor about the Seizure Alert Devices that are readily available.  Had we known this information, we would've had a proper plan in place; thus, potentially saving her life.
